This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary:

N3B is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Engineering & Nuclear Safety Deputy Manager for immediate employment in the Los Alamos, NM office. Great opportunity for a senior engineer with management experience who is ambitious and looking for a unique growth opportunity!

The successful candidate will function as a team leader to build an Engineering Program compliant with DOE O 420.1C to prepare for DSA Implementation of a Nuclear Facility. Upon implementation of the program, this individual will be expected to transition full-time to the Deputy Position in order to assist the Engineering & Nuclear Safety Program Manager (E&NS PM) in directing the Engineering & Nuclear Safety (E&NS) Department operations and serve as the alternate focal point for integration of the department's broad, technically diverse disciplines.

This position reports to the E&NS Program Manager.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

Assist the E&NS PM in serving as interpretive authority for issues related to the full scope of departmental activities, including: design, construction, readiness and start-up operations, configuration management, facility engineering, fire protection, safety basis, radiation protection, hoisting & rigging program, company-wide training, and SMP management (i.e., Electrical Safety/AHJ, Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Engineering, etc.).

  • Will assist the E&NS PM with management direction for the department's day-to-day operations.
  • Ensure operational integration of functional units and assure effective interface with other N3B organizations, EM-LA, DNFSB, various stakeholder organizations (i.e., NMED, State Engineering, EPA, etc.) and corporate organizations.
  • Serve as an expert interpretive authority for all matters related to the Engineering & Nuclear Safety department to ensure effective, consistent strategies.
  • Integrate information from a broad range of functional experts and provide strategic input to the E&NS PM.
  • Facilitate effective communications within the department.
  • Assure compliance with applicable DOE Orders, regulations, national codes and standards and laws related to departmental work scope.
  • Maintain visible commitment to achieving excellence in safety, health, and environmental practices.
  • Provide innovative solutions to complex problems that are based on best available technology, international state-of-the-art methods, processes and procedures.
  • Function as team leader of assigned projects to determine possible solutions to imminent operational, technical or administrative activities.
  • Analyze possible solutions, determining pros and cons, and presents recommendations to the E&NS PM.
  • Assist in tracking subcontract Period of Performance and funding; takes timely actions to ensure project needs are met.
  • May design processes to enhance project documentation workflow.
  • Prepare data and information into presentational material for the client and senior management.
  • Proficient in MS Office to include MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

  • Due to the nature of the work, all candidates must be US Citizens.
  • Two (2) years of experience at a DOE Hazard Category 1 or 2 Facility.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory/management experience.
  • Must have broad, experience-based knowledge of facility operations and engineering principles, methods and associated regulatory requirements.
  • Broad knowledge of company practices and policies, managerial practices, project management, scheduling, personnel supervision and development techniques.
  • High level of skill and ability to perform highly complex and critical tasks to solve problems.
  • Knowledge of DOE O 420.1C requirements for Nuclear Facilities.
  • Excellent ability to track and analyze subcontract costs and budgets.
  • Knowledge of contract policies, procedures, and DOE government regulations affecting contract management.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and follow-through to completion on multiple tasks.
  • Skilled in the preparation and formatting of correspondence, reports, and/or presentations.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills, including proofreading, grammar, spelling, punctuation, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to have an impact on organizational success and productivity, with independent judgment.
  • Ability to train and mentor more junior management and staff in areas of expertise.
  • Level of skill in language, mathematics, communication, reasoning, and computers necessary to perform essential functions of the job.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.


Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor’s degree in a Technical discipline with at least 10 years of relevant experience.

Represents the organization as the prime technical contact for Engineering and Nuclear Safety. Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.

Work is performed under general direction. Participates in determining objectives of assignment. Completed work is reviewed from a relatively long-term perspective, for desired results. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve objectives would normally have a serious effect upon the administration of the organization.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements conducive to a normal office environment. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline. Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. May spend time in the field gathering data and monitoring environmental conditions firsthand. Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions.
