Position Summary:
The Director of Geriatric and Palliative Care Medicine is a member of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Family Medicine for Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM). The Director is responsible for providing clinical care to the senior population through the University Health Center and in regional hospital and long-term care facilities and will also provide supervision and physician oversite to other providers and associated staff at these locations. The Director will assist the Chair of Family Medicine and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs with design, development, and staffing of the clinical geriatric and palliative care curriculum. This role includes assisting in faculty and staff recruitment as well as faculty and staff development to ensure the Geriatric and Palliative Care clinical curriculum is successfully delivered to the CUSOM students. The Director of Geriatric and Palliative Care Medicine will also serve as clinical preceptor and supervisor for CUSOM medical students in the outpatient setting and long-term facilities. The position will also include up to one (1) afternoon per week teaching in Clinical Skills. or Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. The Director of Geriatric and Palliative Care Medicine will report to the Chair of Family Medicine or Internal Medicine based on his/her primary board certification for his/her academic role (20%), and to the Director of the Health Center for his/her clinical role (80%).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate an active and consistent commitment to the Mission of CUSOM.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation a strategic plan for the clinical mission of CUSOM that supports and advances the strategic plan, mission, and vision of the school.
Demonstrate a strong interest in all aspects of geriatric and palliative patient care and the specialties’ healthcare settings (e.g. ambulatory, home, hospital, assisted living, skilled care, long-term care, hospice and palliative care). - Potentially serve as Medical Director of one or more long-term care facilities.
- Collaborate with the nursing staff and the patients' families.
- Partner with nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants.
- Work with the facility’s various quality improvement teams.
- Perform clinical procedures appropriate for a clinic setting based on training and demonstrated competence.
- Create timely, accurate documentation in the medical record of patient history, findings from physical examination, test results, diagnosis, plan of care, treatment, and outcomes.
- Prescribe and administer medications.
- Perform routine vaccinations.
- Provide advice regarding personal health and hygiene.
- Request necessary tests and follow-up visits.
- Refer patients to specialists, as necessary.
- Participate in the implementation of the curriculum for the CUSOM geriatric and palliative care clinical clerkship, the Harnett Health System Family Medicine and Internal Medicine residents.
- Serve as clinical preceptor and supervisor for CUSOM medical students in the outpatient setting and long-term facilities.
- Supervise CUSOM’s Senior Partners Early Clinical Experience program.
- Participate in CUSOM Regional Site Visits and meet with CUSOM geriatric preceptors twice a year either in person or virtually.
- Serve as a faculty instructor in up to one (1) half-day per week teaching in Clinical Skills or Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine labs.
- Participate in faculty meetings and committees as assigned.
- Assure the advancement and integration of high standards for ethical and professional behavior in all aspects of the education of the students of CUSOM and actions of the administration, faculty, and staff.
- Share after-hours telephone call with other providers working in the group.
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
- Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, Title IX, HIPAA, and FERPA guidelines

Education/Experience:
- D.O. or M.D. degree from an accredited college.
- Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
- Fellowship training in Geriatrics and/or Palliative Care Medicine is preferred.
- Demonstrate organizational, communication, ethical, interpersonal, and collaborative skills.
- A valid medical license and ability to obtain a NC medical license.
- Three years of successful academic experience in a medical school and or higher education preferred.
- Preferred track record in teaching and leadership from an accredited medical school.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experienced medical provider for age 55+.
- Interpersonal skills which facilitate a positive relationship with patients and other team members.
- Ability to communicate effectively to all groups through both oral and written channels.
- Ability to work as a group leader and group member, team player.
- Experience with electronic medical records.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
- Comprehensive computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and digital methods of communication.
- Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy, and discretion in dealing with trustees, faculty, staff, students, high-level university officials, and the public.
- Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people.
- Exercise independent judgment in complex, new, and/or stressful situations.
- Manage multiple, concurrent projects, and meet set deadlines.
- Adaptability, flexibility, and a willingness to work in a changing environment.
- Ability to work 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; there is an occasional requirement to work outside of the normal working hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm and may require work on the weekends; including occasional travel and overnight stays.
- This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity, and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University.
Other Information:
- Requires attendance at events within as well as outside of the University setting.
- 80% of the position entails medical practice +/- medical directorship.
- 20% of the position entails academic role.
