Position Summary
The Director of the Center for Diversity Education is responsible for the development, coordination, and administration of programming relevant to the University’s equity and inclusion efforts on-campus and in the community. This includes designing, building and implementing training, lectures, exhibits, curriculum, and other educational experiences. Paramount to the Directors work is the building of relationships through trust and mutual respect to center the stories of underrepresented communities. The Director supports faculty, staff, and educators in the development of inclusive instructional approaches and diversification of curricular and course content. The Director is charged with establishing and nurturing community partnerships in strategic and tactical ways, and designing programs and initiatives that deepen the relationships between the University and the Asheville community; including K-12 schools and non-profit organizations.
The Director provides direct supervision to the ¡Vamos! Program Coordinator and partners with the University’s Advancement Office to raise funds, through grants, sponsorships, and individual donations, for diversity, equity and inclusion projects, programs, and scholarships.
The Director is responsible for partnering with campus partners and academic departments to craft educational experiences that build on course content.

Required Education/Experience/Skills
Master’s degree and at least 2 years of related experience or a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
Master’s degree with at least 5 years of experience or a bachelor’s degree with extensive directly related experience.

Preferred qualifications include:
  • Experience in conducting racial equity, LGBTQIA+, unconscious bias, or other related diversity, equity, and inclusion related training.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including effective social media communication.
  • Experience securing funding for diversity related initiatives.
  • Proven track-record of leadership and strong operational management, including budget development and management; hiring, training, and overseeing interns and/or staff; and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated understanding of intersecting identities that include, but are not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, and socio-economic status.
  • Demonstrated experience promoting dialogue among students, faculty, and staff as well as with community members, other university constituencies, and in the K-12 setting.
  • A strong track record of developing, implementing and assessing programs and initiatives connected to educational learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated analytical and research skills, in addition to project management.
  • The ability to work effectively with, and through students, faculty, staff and administrators to achieve institutional goals.
  • The ability to remain current on issues facing higher education, liberal arts institutions, and K-12 schools.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills including supervision, budget management, student advising, student learning, and program development.
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, verbally and in writing.
