The Lansing Board of Water & Light has an opening for an Electrical Engineer I-III in our Electric System Integrity Department located in Lansing, MI.

Department Summary:

Job Type: Full-Time
Starting Salary Range: $69,000 - $82,000 EE I / $76,700 - $92,800 EE II / $85,200 - $103,900 EE III

The Electric System Integrity Engineering (ESI) department is responsible for engineering activities related to planning, designing, constructing, operating, maintaining, and ensuring regulatory compliance of the BWL electric transmission and distribution systems. Projects may involve some or all the following activities: investigations, transmission and distribution planning, project estimating, economic evaluations, budgeting, scheduling, system protection, design engineering, drawing development and review, construction and commissioning support, creating, and presenting reports, training, and project management.

Position Summary:

Primary roles of the Electric System Integrity Department include:

  • Transmission & Distribution Standards and Material Specifications
  • Transmission & Distribution Protection and Control
  • Transmission & Distribution Asset Management
  • North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Compliance

Essential Functions:
  • Skills for specified Engineer Levels. – (position descriptions available upon request for specified levels)
  • Develop knowledge and skills in specific practice areas.
  • Evaluates, selects, applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional design/planning/analysis projects with few complex features.
  • Collaboratively uses judgement to determine adaptations in methods for non-routine aspects of assignments.
  • Works on small projects/tasks or portions of larger projects/tasks.
  • Performs moderate design/planning/analysis tasks.
  • Prepares portions of or entire technical documents, depending on complexity.
  • Edits technical documents such as plans, applications, reports, specifications, etc.
  • Perform research and investigation.
  • Assigns tasks to and coordinates work with entry-level engineers, technicians, or administrative staff.
  • Assists in determining schedule and budget requirements.
  • Those who have a PE license seals documents of their designs for permits, plans and discipline specific materials and meet the requirements of their license.
  • Serves as a coach.
  • Active development of leadership skills should be continued.
  • Able to make intermediate level decisions independently and seek out assistance from higher level engineers for decisions they do not have the expertise yet developed.
  • Possesses effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Possesses advanced problem-solving skills and intermediate troubleshooting skills.
  • Assists with client, customer, or official contracts and communications pertaining to specific assignments or meetings.
  • Independently conduct project engineering meetings and relay information to all members of the project team.
  • Participation in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System and Work Management processes.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Specifications:
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Electrical engineering degree.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments in all weather conditions, around energized electrical equipment, and in noisy or dirty environments with proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally.
  • Possess basic problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office, or other word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Must have valid Ml driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Requirements based on level:
EE I
  • Must have a zero to two years of engineering experience. Will consider depth and breadth of experience.
  • Starting Wage: $69,000 - $82,000
EE II
  • Must have a minimum of two to five years of engineering experience.
  • Starting Wage: $76,700 - $92,800
EE III
  • Must have a minimum of five to eight years of engineering experience.
  • Starting Wage: $85,200 - $103,900

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the working day. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment including the use of stairs. Constantly operates a computer, and other office equipment. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen. Must communicate frequently with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in industrial environments, and uneven terrain. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, colors on prints, and/or operate field instruments/equipment.

Works in temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions, and in industrial environments.
