The Department of Revenue's Audit Division is excited to announce two opportunities for an Excise Tax Examiner 3 (In-training) with its Audit Standards & Procedures unit. One is a permanent position and the other a non-permanent position expecting to last 12 months.

The Audit Standards & Procedures unit is responsible for the review of all field audit reports for mathematical accuracy and proper application of tax law and accounting theory prior to issuing an assessment for additional tax or a credit for over payment. In general terms, the lead examiners are recognized for their technical expertise, providing guidance to audit staff on account and tax issues. Examiners ensure the quality and accuracy of audit reports throughout the division.

The hiring manager may start screening applicants as early as March 2, 2023, and make a hiring decision at any time after. It will be to your advantage to submit materials as soon as possible.

Telework: This position has the flexibility to work remotely, however the duty station is in Tumwater, Washington and the successful candidate must agree to travel to the office for key scheduled meetings or as operational needs dictate. Details of teleworking considerations will be addressed during the interview process.

Duties

As an Excise Tax Examiner 3 (ETE3) in the Audit Standards & Procedures unit, you will assist the division in achieving its annual revenue commitment to the legislature through account research, examination and assessment of tax liability. Your other responsibilities will include managed audits, voluntary disclosure assessments, post audit adjustments, and below threshold audits. Here are some other essential functions of the job:

  • Examine, review and issue the most complex field audits and desk examinations as well as post audit adjustments.
  • Conduct full scope review of all workpapers, exhibits, and audit narratives.
  • Complete complex calculations and other adjustments needed to ensure audits are posted correctly.
  • Collaborate with ATLAS developers on any system issues affecting the Audit division.
  • Assist in providing shadowing opportunities to division staff and training of unit staff.

Qualifications

To join us at the ETE 3 level you will possess (Salary: $4,425 - $5,960):

One year as an Excise Tax Examiner 2

OR

Two years of Department of Revenue experience at the journey level in accounting, auditing, compliance or tax administration, provided 12 semester (18 quarter) hours of accounting course work has been completed.

To join us at the ETE 2 level you will possess (Salary: $4,013 - $5,399):

One year as an Excise Tax Examiner 1

OR

Two years of Department of Revenue experience in accounting, auditing compliance or tax administration, provided 12 semester (18 quarter) hours of accounting course work has been completed.

OR

A Bachelor's degree involving major study in business or public administration or closely allied field with a minimum of 12 semester (or 18 quarter) hours of accounting.

AND

One year of accounting or auditing experience.
