We’re looking for an independent, energetic candidate with a passion for food justice and youth development to serve as the Farmer-Educator for a new vertical hydroponic farm located inside the Bruce Randolph School in the Clayton neighborhood! Join our team and maintain and operate this farm as a year-round, local source of freshly grown produce and a beacon for health education.
The Farmer-Educator will play a critical role in empowering and educating students to work and advocate for major systems change in bringing healthy, affordable food to their communities. As the Farmer, you’ll have a high degree of autonomy and also responsibility for all aspects of your farm’s operations, which mimic those of a commercial hydroponic grower. As the Educator, you’ll build student, school, and community connections to the farm, its work, and its food justice mission and help lay the groundwork for a food-secure future.

Main Responsibilities:
Carry out daily farm tasks, including but not limited to: planting, transplanting, and harvesting crops; monitoring, tracking, and reporting all farm production data; cleaning equipment; completing checklists; maintaining close communication with Farm Operations and Program Management
Observe and report plant health issues (i.e., pests, diseases, and equipment issues)
Collect and report data in an online farm management system
Observe and enforce farm safety protocols for all students, staff, and visitors
Ensure production targets are met and streamlining transport of harvested crops from the farm to their final distribution destination
Maintain high standards of cleanliness on the farm and ensuring that the farm is safe, clean, and presentable at all times
Lead periodic farm tours
Manage the produce supply chain to the cafeteria, events, and recurring community food distributions
Work with (and lead) students to operate a production-scale hydroponic farm in a public school
Co-teach weekly STEM classes that utilize the farm and engaging students in weekly sessions of our afterschool food justice program
Brainstorm ways for students to take ownership of, and connect with, the curricular day and afterschool content presented
Serving as the farm’s representative within our school community
Requirements:
High school diploma or GED
Ability to clear a required criminal background check (required to work in schools)
Ability to clearly, consistently, and accurately communicate both verbally and electronically
Comfortable using a Windows PC for email, data entry, and calendars
Ability to follow directions and provide directions to others
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
Ability to adhere to existing organizational systems
Ability to work independently but also be a team player
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Ability to climb ladders/rolling staircases
Desired Qualifications:
Bilingual speaker of Spanish and English
Able to provide reliable daily transportation to and from the Bruce Randolph School campus
