SummaryPerforms semiskilled trades work in the operation, repair and maintenance of the water and sewer collections system, related systems, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the assigned Crew Leader. Qualification Requirements

Deliver excellent customer experiences in all interactions with internal and external customers.
Repairing and maintaining water distribution and sewer collections system; performing maintenance responsibilities as assigned; performing landscaping work.
Safely control traffic through the work zone to ensure safety of crew. As required by North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), the flagger protects the lives of workers, guide traffic through the work area, to avoid unreasonable delays to motorists.
Operates service truck, back-hoe, trencher, boring machine and related equipment. Repairs major and minor leaks in water distribution/sewer collections system.
Installs individual water/sewer services such as water/sewer taps. Locates water/sewer lines and valves.
Repairs driveways and landscaping of work sites such as weed eating and tree trimming. Assists other crews on job sites when requested.
Changes meter boxes; installs, disassembles, raises and lowers water meters and sewer clean outs. Locates meters and water lines.
Disconnects illegal hookups. Performs vehicle maintenance.
Participates in cross-training exercises.
Requires the ability to work outside normal work hours in emergency and on-call situations.
In case of disaster, either natural or man-made, as a condition of employment employee will be called upon to serve ONWASA customers. Service to customers during a disaster will result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this class description.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - General knowledge of the repair and maintenance of water distribution/sewer collection system; general knowledge of water/sewer line construction methods and techniques; general knowledge of the installation, repair and reading of water meters; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work; skill in the use and care of tools of the trade; ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization; ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs; ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations; ability to work in difficult work stations for extended periods; ability to keep records and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers and the general public. Physical Demands & Work Environment
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms-length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic). Education and Experience & Special Requirements
High
school diploma or GED with experience in water and wastewater operations.
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
NCDOT
Flagger certified, AED/CPR/First Aid certified, and Stop the Bleed trained.
Must
meet the minimum driving standards set by ONWASA and have possession of an
appropriate driver"s license in the State of North Carolina.
This
