The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

Reporting to the Director of Payroll Services, the Payroll Specialist will assist with the production and processing of all payrolls for the University using the Banner payroll system while complying with all court garnishments and tax levy laws and regulations. The individual in this position will perform work of a specialized and confidential nature and must interpret and understand both University policy and federal tax regulations and State labor law guidelines to process payrolls in compliance with the law.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Handle adjustments and time entry review for all payrolls.
  • Provide outstanding customer service
  • Process federal and state tax forms and direct deposit forms
  • Interpret federal and state tax laws in order to answer questions and aid in the processing of W2, W4 and NC4 forms
  • Understand and process payroll reconciliations
  • Use software for processing payroll. For example: Banner, Microsoft Office Suite and ONBASE scanning software.
  • Calculate a paycheck manually from gross to net.
  • Calculation and administration of payroll overpayments.
  • Process and maintain records and compliance for child support, bankruptcy orders, garnishments and tax levies.
  • Serves as backup for leave administration and/or bi-weekly payroll.
  • Responsible for completing all unemployment claims.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
  • Knowledge and understanding of IRS, DOL, and Social Security regulations pertaining to payroll
  • In-Depth knowledge working with child support orders, garnishments, and tax levies.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully use Microsoft Office software including excel and Banner.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully provide quality customer service.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance records.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work independently, organize own work and coordinate work activities with other payroll staff.
  • Excellent grammar and proofreading skills.
Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a four year college or university; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills.
  • Two to four years related work experience in processing payroll with 300 or more employees.
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Higher education experience
  • Banner experience highly desirable
