Job Summary:
CNPC USA is actively seeking creative, innovative, best-in-class experts to join our growing team. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Computational Scientist with advanced knowledge and expertise in downhole drilling tool simulation and numerical analysis. The Computational Scientist will be responsible for conceptualizing, evaluating, validating, verifying, and optimizing products in the drilling portfolio.
This position reports to the R&D Manager of Drilling Products
Responsibilities:
- Form feasible design concepts for down-hole drilling products
- Assess and optimize design options, reliability, material selections, operational conditions at various levels (part, assembly, portfolio) and stages of product design lifecycle
- Diagnose root causes of down-hole drilling tool failure
- Conduct all business activities in accordance with CNPC USA core values
- Commitment to occupational health, safety & working environment based on HSE rules and regulations
- Adheres to and is an advocate of CNPC USA Product Development and Commercialization Process ensuring cross-functional workflow through all phases of stage gate product development process
- Prepare project plans, schedules, budgets, and status reports
- Author/co-author technical reports, papers, articles, patents, and presentations
- Assume and perform other duties and responsibilities as required
Key Skills:
- 7+ years of progressive FEA/CFD experience in design and development of downhole drilling tools
- Thorough technical understanding of the physics/mechanics, mathematics and numerical technics/principles involved in the structural, thermal, and fluidic analysis
- Demonstrated expertise in FEA and/or CFD using ANSYS, ABAQUS or other equivalent software
- Experience in developing nonlinear elastic/plastic constitutive models and analyzing elastic/plastic components/parts/assemblies is a plus
- Experience in automation and functionality enhancement of existing FEA/CFD software through APIs
- Familiar with downhole drilling tools and drilling processes
- Working knowledge of API, ISO, and ASME standards for design and testing
- Proven ability to deliver on time, on target, with quality and sustainability.
- Effective time management, organizational, presentation, and communication skills
- Project management skills including risk identification and mitigation planning
- Ability to multi-task and adjust to changing schedules and deadlines based on priorities
- Self-starter and team player with ability to work independently when needed
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with 7-10 years of experience in performing downhole drilling tools evaluation and analysis using numerical methods
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States of America
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing, bending and the ability to lift 20lbs is required.
Travel:
This position requires some overnight international and domestic travel. Local travel between other CNPC USA locations and testing facilities is required.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, however, does act as a mentor and point of contact for less experienced mechanical design engineers.
