Job description
The phlebotomist at La Fe will be responsible for drawing blood from patients for diagnostic purposes. They will be responsible for labeling the specimen vials and arranging transportation of specimens to laboratories for analysis. Phlebotomist are expected to be thorough when carrying out their duties, successfully maintain records of blood drawings, and generate reports to submit to physicians and/or other healthcare professionals as applicable.
- Identifying patients and their personal information by reviewing their identity documents.
- Assessing patient needs, reviewing patient history, and determining the reason(s) for drawing blood.
- Selecting gauge needles and preparing veins or fingers for blood drawing.
- Extracting blood from patients through venipuncture or finger sticks.
- Analyzing blood specimens using the correct testing equipment, when necessary.
- Preparing specimens for transportation, including labeling vials accurately and matching blood specimens to patients.
- Supplying diagnostic notes to physicians, other healthcare professionals or clinic designee.
- Keeping and maintaining records of patient names, volume of blood drawn, and diagnostic findings.
- Cleaning, maintaining, and calibrating laboratory equipment used in the drawing and testing of blood specimens.
- Ordering laboratory supplies, as needed.
- Bilingual English/Spanish.
- 0 months to 2 years of experience in a health care setting.
- CPR Certified.
- High School diploma or GED required.
- General knowledge and education in phlebotomy acquired through and accredited training program is required. Completion of formal training through an accredited phlebotomy training program or one year of phlebotomy experience.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to exercise good judgment in unusual or stressful situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and use proper patient identification methods.
- Ability to work effectively with local, state and national organizations.
- Ability to represent La Fe in public functions, presentations, organizations, etc.
- Ability to relate well to persons of all ages and cultures.
- Basic laboratory skills required.
- Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- Experience using effective puncture techniques.
- Knowledge of testing protocols and the use of testing equipment.
- Knowledge of legal requirements pertaining to drawing blood, handling specimen samples, and the use of relevant medical equipment.
- Bilingual English/Spanish.
