SUPERVISOR: Clinical Nurse Coordinator
RESPONSIBLE TO: Nurse Manager
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Physician Assistant Surgical First Assist provides assistive care to cardiothoracic and other surgeons as required during surgical procedures.
PAFA duties are assigned by the OR Charge Nurse.
The PAFA will be primarily assigned to assist surgeons during pediatric cardiothoracic surgeries. If these cases are not available, they will assist adult cardiothoracic surgeons. If not available, the PAFA will then assist/scrub in other department cases at the Clinical Nurse Coordinator's discretion, provided that they can be made available to assist for emergency open heart or vascular cases.
The PAFA will be responsible for rounding on Cardiothoracic patients in the prep and recovery areas. Duties may include pre and post-operative assessments, medication orders, discharge planning, etc.
STATEMENT OF PRACTICE:
The PAFA will work under the direction of the Surgical Administrative Leadership team, as well as their supervising physician, to provide direct care to surgical patients during operative procedures. They will discuss all procedures with their supervising physician in advance, and only according to established privileges granted by the Medical Staff Office

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Current license to practice as a Physician's Assistant in the State of Nevada by the Nevada Medical Board. Certification as First Assistant through a nationally accredited certification agency. Current certification from the National Commission on Certification of P.A.s. Certification in BLS required, PALS preferred. Documentation of assisting in cardiovascular/thoracic surgery cases for a period of three (3) months, AND documentation of at participation in at least thirty (30) cases. Documentation demonstrating clinical competency to perform endoscopic vein harvesting.
EDUCATION: Graduate of Accredited Physician's Assistant program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Basic computer and hospital informatics skills required.
Specialty Certification required
CPR required
ACLS, PALS preferred
Complies with hospital employee health, infection control and safety management programs
Endoscopic vein harvesting experience is required.
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) months of experience as a first assist PA in cardiovascular/thoracic cases
Completion of at least thirty (30) cardiovascular/thoracic cases
Endoscopic vein harvesting
LICENSURE: Current Nevada Physician's Assistant licensure
Current Nevada prescriptive authority
Independently maintains license
Acquires required contact hours to maintain practice
Certification as FA required
AGE SPECIFIC DATA:
Maintains current knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and demonstrates the ability to incorporate knowledge into nursing process.
