Research Project Management
The person hired for this position will support the turfgrass, specialty crop, and forestry weed research and extension program. The main role of this position is to work closely with the Horticulture Weed Management specialist to implement and help manage research/extension projects at research stations and on-farm sites state-wide. Regular travel throughout Arkansas for research trials and demonstrations is expected. Responsibilities will include creating plot maps and plans, establishing plantings of specialty crops, spraying specialty crops with a CO2 backpack sprayer, rating differences in treatments, taking weed counts, plant heights, and other data collection, plot photographs, and detailed note taking. Close attention to detail will be key to the main goals of these trials which include applying pesticide treatments at exact timings, observing differences in plot treatments, and recording data and other notes in a manageable way. Additionally, collaborating with staff and growers will be key to the success of this position.
Purchasing and Inventory
Regular inventory such as disposable gloves, Tyvek suits, plastic boot covers, pesticide spray bottles, sprayer parts, pesticides, and other miscellaneous lab equipment will be maintained and restocked by this staff member. Purchasing and ordering should be done in advance and in a well-organized manner to maintain sufficient inventory of research supplies for upcoming and ongoing field trials
Data Management and Analysis
Management of data from all research trials or extension efficacy trials will be completed by the person hired for this position. This will include taking the notes and observations from the field and compiling them into easy to understand excel documents and ARM software for later use. Knowledge of excel table/figure creation is expected so data can be monitored throughout the year. Only basic statistical analysis will be expected (means, standard error).
Equipment Maintenance and Assembly
Research backpack sprayers, irrigation controllers, weed-eaters, mowers, and other equipment will require maintenance (e.g., cleaning, oil change, simple repairs). Technical instruments will require regular calibration, battery replacement, software updates, and general troubleshooting. Compressed CO2-operated backpack sprayers are used regularly to apply pesticide treatments. Boom assembly, maintenance, and sprayer calibration will be the responsibility of the person in this position.
Extension Media
The person hired for this position will also support the turfgrass and specialty crop programs by communicating with other program associates and providing up-to-date information for webpages. This will include blog posts developed by the specialist and helping to prepare Qualtrics polls or Constant Contact newsletters. The person in this position will also be responsible for utilizing the SlickText platform to send out timely weed management updates. Training for specific software will be available, but some experience with writing/editing is expected. Periodically, the person in this position will be asked to present to stakeholders throughout the state and region.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Turfgrass Science, Agronomy, or a related field plus 3 years of related professional experience OR a related Master's degree is required. The person hired for this position must be able to work outside in during sunny and hot conditions in summer as well as cold conditions in fall, winter, or spring.
Preferred Qualifications:
Operational knowledge of equipment such as mowers and tractors is preferred. Experience managing turfgrass, such as a golf course or sod farm or growing fruits and vegetables commercially is ideal.
