About Oishii:

At Oishii, we grow the best fruit in the world by deploying ground-breaking vertical farming technology that pushes the boundaries of agriculture. We're the first in the WORLD to grow fruit in an indoor vertical farm at commercial scale. We started with strawberries, which we debuted at Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare, the three star Michelin restaurant considered by critics to be among the best in the world. Since then, we have supplied our strawberries to food-loving consumers, world-class restaurants, and specialty retailers across NYC. Our proprietary technology enables us to grow the very best produce year-round, at the same high level of quality, all without using any pesticides.

Oishii has been profiled in Eater, NPR, Time Magazine, and Fortune. Oishi was also one of the Fast Companies Most Innovative Companies of 2022.

Everything we do works toward accomplishing our mission of transforming agriculture sustainably while bringing produce that truly delights people everywhere. This requires farmers, engineers, scientists, product managers, and members of many other backgrounds to work together day-in and day-out to innovate, while operating increasingly large farms. We have an amazing mission-driven team of highly motivated and engaged members.

About the role:

We are seeking an Engineering Project Lead to join the Oishii team!

We are developing advanced farm systems that leverage robotics, artificial intelligence, and automation technologies to optimize production and streamline operations. We are studying every aspect of strawberry production and finding ways to beat the status quo.

On the plant science front we are creating smarter farms that can automatically analyze plant health, monitor environmental conditions, fine-tune nutrient levels, understand and control the micro-organism ecosystems, and much more.

On the backend operations we are asking things like: How do we automate highly manual repotting operations? What packaging solutions will increase throughput? How do we optimize the flow of people and product?

As an Engineering Project Lead, you will get to work on all these challenges, in addition to creating robotic unmanned ground vehicles that roam our farms collecting data, developing full-scale automated indoor farm facilities, and many other exciting projects.

Who you are:

We are seeking an Engineering Project Lead to drive the most cutting edge engineering projects Oishii has to offer. An out-of-the-box thinker who loves coming up with clever solutions to complex problems, many of which haven't been encountered before.

Candidate must have 7+ years of experience developing systems that incorporate mechanical, electrical, and software design. This role will have a strong physical component, so a person who is comfortable in a machine shop is a must.

Candidate must be capable of leading teams of engineers to develop and maintain systems with limited oversight.

As the Engineering Project Lead, you will:

  • Oversee the development of engineering solutions and be responsible for all aspects from strategy development through solutions deployment
  • Contribute to the value engineering of vertical farm systems by leveraging your deep knowledge of design, rapid prototyping, materials, and manufacturing at scale
  • Coordinate cross-functionally to understand the needs of plants, personnel, and systems within vertical farm environments
  • Manage cross functional teams to deliver highly technical solutions rapidly and with minimal oversight
  • Design next generation racking and structural systems
  • Manage the development of robotic systems for in-farm plant health monitoring, pollination, and pest management
  • Iterating on robotic harvesting concepts and incorporate into highly automated farm facilities
  • Lead prototyping efforts and manage Oishii's prototyping laboratory
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external vendors, manufacturers, and partners

Engineering Project Lead Requirements

  • 7+ years technical engineering experience. Some project and people management experience preferred
  • Track record of delivering engineering solutions on time, on budget, and in accordance with project requirements
  • Significant hands on experience with full life cycle manufacturing, including material selection and machining processes
  • Passionate about rapid prototyping (CNC routing, 3d printing, PCB design); you know your way around the shop and are able to use all tools safely. Welding and metal fabrication experience are a plus
  • Experience with complex robotic systems, such as industrial automation, IoT devices, embedded systems
  • Have understanding of electrical design and some exposure to PLC/controls systems preferred
  • Familiar with software, ideally python, and able to learn new languages quickly
  • Have led several system designs processes from requirements generation through manufacturing, feedback, and iteration cycles
  • Experienced in mechanical design and proficient in CAD
  • Enjoy both engineering management as well as independent hands on work when necessary

Engineering Project Lead details:

  • Compensation: Competitive salary plus options
  • Benefits: Medical HRA, PTO, 401(K), Performance Bonus, Professional Development
  • Location: While based at the company's headquarters in Jersey City, NJ, you will also be working in Kearny, NJ and may have some limited travel to new farm locations to ensure that your system designs are implemented properly. Some hybrid work may be permitted, but the vast majority of the role will be on site and in close collaboration with your teams.
