PURPOSE: The Public Safety Program Manager is responsible for providing programmatic and administrative support to leadership and the Public Services Division in the coordination and implementation of the union’s efforts to fight for racial and economic justice and reimagine the future of policing and public safety. They will also support union-wide initiatives and serve as a liaison with staff, officers and external contacts throughout the union.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the Public Services Division leadership team to execute and integrate union and department priorities and projects within the scope of job responsibilities;
  • Develop and manage project plans;
  • Produce accurate, well-written, and analytical memos, letters, and other documents that help inform leadership and senior staff decision-making;
  • Manage timelines, workflow, communications, production of deliverables, and other aspects of program implementation as needed;
  • Research and synthesize information from meetings and other conversations, with recommendations on next steps;
  • Provide general project support including scheduling meetings, setting meeting agendas and developing program materials;
  • Travel to provide in-person logistics support for meetings and conferences as needed;
  • Build and develop relationship with various stakeholders to respond to the challenges and effectively solve problems and eliminate barriers for implementation;
  • Help to drive internal communications throughout the union, including preparing documents and presentations for the International Executive Board, Executive Committee, Executive Office, and staff;
  • Assist in the preparation of materials for meetings and presentations for or with International Executive Board, Executive Committee, Officers, union-wide committees, and senior staff;
  • Handle sensitive issues that require high-levels of confidentiality;
  • Adhere to strict deadlines for completion of all assigned work;
  • Ensure that all responsibilities are carried out with careful attention to equity and through use of a racial justice lens.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned in support of the program.

CONTACTS: SEIU Executive Officers and various senior leaders; Public Division leadership and staff; Political, Community and Union leaders and staff; SEIU International staff, and employers.

DIRECTION AND DECISION MAKING: This position reports to the Public Division Director and must often work without supervision.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of three (3) years of related work experience OR a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Outstanding writing, verbal, and analytical communication skills;
  • Knowledge of labor unions and their operation;
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite programs;
  • A high level of judgment, ability to take initiative, and work independently;
  • Ability to work with diverse group of SEIU leaders, SEIU members, and staff in complex and political situations;
  • Ability to exercise limited independent judgment and make decisions in consultation with peers or higher-level managers
  • A high level of curiosity about SEIU and social/economic justice movements;
  • Passion for improving the lives of SEIU members and working people everywhere;
  • Ability to model consistently the vision and values of the union, as well as our leadership standards;
  • Must be able to handle multiple, complex, projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work in this position will generally be performed in an office setting. However, the job may require work in other settings conducive to performing the tasks required to complete assignments. Must be available fortravel, including overnight stays. Travel and work beyond traditional business hours is required.
