Position Summary:

The Department of Residence Life (DRL) at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), seeks a dedicated and enthusiastic candidate for a full-time, 4-year term, 11-month/year, Residence Coordinator position. The Residence Coordinator is a live-in, master's degree-level professional-responsible for the operation of one of our residential campus living areas. This position requires the Residence Coordinator to reside in an assigned, fully furnished on-campus apartment throughout the term of their appointment, with room and board included. This position reports to the Director of Residence Life, and works in concert with a team of Residence Coordinators to shape the environment and experiences of the residential population; support residents directly by connecting them to academic, leadership and social engagement opportunities; providing services and programs focused on UAA’s residential curriculum; and strengthening residents’ sense of belonging at UAA.

Duties:

10FACILITIES MANAGEMENT: Monitor area complex facilities to minimize wear and tear, encourage safety and security, and develop resident responsibility and community pride. Develop strategies for facility damage reduction through community development. Investigate and communicate facility concerns to Housing Maintenance. Provide first responder coverage for facility related issues to assess needed action to resolve the issue.Essential
10GORSUCH COMMONS INFORMATION DESK COORDINATOR: Provide vision and leadership for the information desk in the Gorsuch Commons, and ensure a positive experience for visitors at the information desk and the Gorsuch Commons in general. Serve as the supervisor to the student Residential Community Assistants who work at the information desk, including their hiring, training, scheduling and evaluation. Coordinate with Campus Services on information desk functions that fall under Housing Facilities and Finance. Coordinate with the Administrative Assistant and Mailroom Coordinator on ensuring accurate and timely distribution of mail to residents. Utilize assessment and customer satisfaction data to create a culture of continuous improvement of our information desk experience.Essential
15CRITICAL INCIDENT RESPONSE: Serve as a Campus Safety Authority and a Responsible Employee. As a live-in professional staff member, Residence Coordinators provide critical, 24-hour on-call coverage and respond to the physical and mental health needs of residential students at an open access institution. On-call duty coverage is shared on a rotating basis with other professional staff members in Residence Life. Plan and implement the delivery of proactive safety and educational programs for students living on-campus.Essential
15PROGRAM PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT: Coordinate the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of educational/academic success, social and wellness-based programs, as well as community development activities for the residential community in accordance with a living/learning philosophy and the department’s residential curriculum. Develop, implement and support Living Learning Communities and housing programs hosted on the residential campus. Support other Residence Life staff members in the implementation of area programs and initiatives. Serve as a liaison on behalf of Residence Life to departments inside and outside of Student Affairs in support of the effective operation of the institution. 15RESIDENTIAL CARE TEAM: Serve as a member of the Residential CARE Team attending weekly meetings and giving updates on students of concern within the residential community. Support students by connecting them to appropriate resources and services including, but not limited to: campus and community partners, counseling services, academic support resources, assistance navigating processes, mediating roommate conflicts and performing welfare checks.Essential
15STUDENT CONDUCT: Direct the student-centered and developmental application of the student conduct process by appropriately addressing the behaviors of residential students that may constitute a violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Operate within the time constraints dictated by Regents’ Policy and University Regulation. Collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistency in addressing alleged violations, investigations, resolutions and sanctioning. Maintain confidential student records.Essential
15SUPERVISION: Recruit, select, train, supervise, motivate and evaluate paraprofessional staff members including Resident Advisors (RAs) and Peer Academic & Wellness Leaders (PAWs). Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of environmental impact on students; behavioral theories; student, community and identity development theories; safety and security issues/strategies; UAA and community resources. Ability to mentor, advise and counsel college students. Knowledge of issues facing university student populations issues, including, but not limited to identity development, alcohol/drug abuse, safety and security, need for social connections and/or mental and physical health concerns. Ability to advise student organizations and residential community governance groups; plan and organize student-centered programming.

  • The desire and ability to work with and support diverse groups of people, integrating knowledge of diverse cultural practices, the impact of systems of oppression, intersectionality and a recognition of one’s own implicit bias. Demonstrated commitment to creating inclusive and welcoming environments for all the identities represented in the campus community, especially historically marginalized identities.   • Ability and skills to effectively serve in an on-call duty rotation, including emergency response/support; victim assistance/advocacy; identify issues needing to be referred to professionals and first responders; maintaining confidentiality; incident debriefing. Skills and training in conflict resolution, mediation, critical incident response and management. Independent decision-making skills.

  • Knowledge of nationally accepted student conduct standards and federal laws pertaining to student disciplinary processes. Understanding of due process and the ability to accurately and efficiently process student conduct proceedings. Ability to issue developmental and educational sanctions; conducting thorough investigations into alleged violations of a student code of conduct or policies governing a residential community. Skills developed in the areas of fact finding; confrontation; mediation; documentation.

  • Familiarity with Title IX and the ability to perform as a Mandated Reporter. Familiarity with the Clery Act and the ability to perform as a Campus Security Authority. An understanding of the Federal Education Rights and Protection Act (FERPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Act, landlord/tenant laws, employment laws and other applicable laws and regulations, as well as their influence on operations in a university residence life department is preferred.

  • Excellent ability to effectively supervise, motivate, evaluate and support paraprofessional student staff members. Skills that excel in scheduling student employees; assessing student needs and interests; role-modeling; public speaking/presenting; facilitating meetings; enforcement of behavioral standards/policies; developing cohesive teams; active listening; consulting; organizational management; creativity.

  • Ability to effectively train staff members utilizing innovative technology; adult learning theories; student-centered training practices; a balance of theoretical teaching and practical application experiences.   • Comprehensive community management skills, including facility operations; assessment for environmental, health and safety issues; comparing trends and analyzing data. Comfort with technology and social media, and current computer skills for use in spreadsheet management and word document processing.

  • Knowledge of the opportunities and challenges associated with apartment-style living. Ability to effectively supervise and guide student staff members working apartments. Familiarity with the unique needs of student populations generally found within apartment communities.

Typical Experience:
  • Experience working in an educational setting, preferably at an institution of higher education.

  • One year of live-in professional staff member experience for a student housing department at an institution of higher education is preferred.

  • Experience using literature, research and theories in areas such as student development, leadership, community development and identity development to inform practice.

  • Experience working with a program that includes the housing of participants as a component, preferably a residence life program at a college or university.

  • Experience successfully integrating a knowledge of and an appreciation for inclusivity, equity and diverse cultural practices into interactions with others. Training in diversity and cultural sensitivity, and the ability to train others in topics related to diversity, inclusion and social justice.

  • Experience recruiting, selecting, supervising and training university paraprofessional student staff.

  • Programming or event management experience, preferably covering areas relevant to the college setting: educational, academic success, civic engagement, safety awareness and substance abuse education.

  • Experience facilitating university student conduct hearings, preferably involving violations commonly seen in student housing communities at institutions of higher education.

  • Experience operating under laws and regulations relevant to student housing, including the Clery Act, Title IX, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act, the Fair Housing Act, landlord-tenant laws and employment laws.

  • Experience with serving in an on-call duty rotation with responsibility for crisis response, conflict mediation, counseling or behavior intervention in a university environment.

  • Experience advising university student organizations, fraternities, sororities or university student housing governance groups (i.e. a hall council or residence hall association).

  • Experience with facilities management, responding to calls for service regarding maintenance issues for assessment purposes and/or responsibility for environmental impacts on users of a space.



Required Education or Training:
  • Master’s degree required (or a combination of significant, relevant education with at least a bachelor’s degree earned and directly related work experience equivalent to an advanced degree), preferably in a higher education administration or student services related field.

  • Successful applicants must provide official transcripts documenting academic credentials required for the position as a condition of employment. Qualifying earned degrees must be conferred either by institutions of higher education which are accredited by one of the six US regional accrediting associations or by an equivalent international institution of higher education as determined by UAA based on a review by a foreign educational credential evaluation service and recognized by UAA.

  • Experience with direct supervision of employees.

  • Experience working at an institution of higher education.

  • Experience responding to or managing crisis situations (i.e. threats to the health, safety or welfare of an individual, a community or their property).

Compensation & Anticipated Start Date
  • This is a full-time, term-funded, 11-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
  • This is a live-in position requiring the employee to reside in a furnished residence hall apartment in UAA's residential campus. A meal plan is provided during the academic year.
  • This position has a four-year term limit.
  • Anticipated start date: July 16, 2023.
