JOB SUMMARY

The Residence Hall Coordinator (RHC), as an educator, provides direction for student learning and academic success while managing, or co-managing the overall administrative, supervisory, and community experiences for a co-educational residence hall or apartment areas. These areas can range in both size and structure and house anywhere from 500 to 900 residents. The Residence Hall Coordinator must be committed to working within an innovative environment that is focused on the education of students within a residential setting through the development of cohesive living and learning communities. The successful staff member must have a passion for working with a diverse student population, be committed to student learning and development, possess strong critical thinking and problem solving skills, demonstrate initiative, communicate effectively, have a positive attitude, and an ability to manage structured autonomy.

Staff positions in Housing and Residence Life are not traditional office hour positions. Schedules are influenced by student and community needs. There will be times throughout the year when the Residence Hall Coordinator will be expected to work evenings and weekends.

The Residence Hall Coordinator role requires the successful candidate to reside in a provided on-campus apartment, within the community the Residence Hall Coordinator serves, for the full duration of the appointment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Residential Curriculum

  • Implement learning outcome focused lesson plans for building and/or area
  • Promote community development at the floor and hall level
  • Incorporate augmented community experiences to enhance student learning & development
  • Establish goals and priorities for building inclusive communities
  • Track, review, analyze feedback from program assessments

Staff Supervision, Selection, and Development

  • Supervise a variety of student staff, which includes: Resident Advisors, Lead Resident Advisor, Learning Community Peer Mentors, Desk Manager, Desk Workers, and possibly a Graduate Hall Coordinator
  • Evaluate staff efforts/progress based on formal and informal needs assessment, learning outcomes and targeted goals
  • Facilitate the Resident Advisor course for Resident Advisors each academic year
  • Foster ideals of Cura Personalis by encouraging individual, personal and professional development

Community Standards and Student Conduct

  • Serve as a hearing officer for cases and conduct meetings with student(s) utilizing a restorative justice model
  • Determine responsibility and assign sanctions-, such as fees/fines, educational tasks, reflection activities, community service- or refer to Restorative Justice
  • Utilize Maxient (conduct database) to track student incidents and manage assigned cases
  • Advise Resident Advisors and student leaders to confront negative student behavior
  • Document or assist in the documentation of incidents as they arise
  • Be actively involved in the resolution of student issues and concerns in a timely manner

Academic Support

  • Participate in meetings to discuss opportunities, issues, and strategies to promote student learning
  • Work with faculty, staff, and student stakeholders to develop integrated experiences for learning communities
  • Coordinate academic achievement recognition/incentive programs

Student Leadership

  • Support the student staff leadership development curriculum
  • Advise Hall or Apartment Council executive board for building/area
  • Participate in the facilitation of student leadership training for student staff and student leaders
  • Promote student leadership opportunities within the residence halls and apartments

Assessment

  • Utilize quantitative and qualitative assessment to produce positive changes and provide quality service to students
  • Support and administer approved department and/or division assessment programs/initiatives
  • Capture feedback from residents about academic, personal, or community success/issues/concerns
  • Track and assess intervention efforts for reporting purposes
  • Oversee budget process with Hall or Apartment Council Vice President of Finance
  • Serve as a secondary connect with students through the MAP-Works first-year and sophomore assessment surveys

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain a balanced schedule of office hours for committee and conduct meetings, staff one-on-ones, and walk-in appointments with students
  • Provide written reports (weekly student/ facility report, on-call incident reports, quarterly reports)
  • Supervision of desk operations including payroll approval
  • Manage student assignment and occupancy changes within building/ area
  • Coordinate hall/area opening, closing, and summer transition
  • Manage assigned budget accounts (building community development funds, Hall Council funds, administrative funds)
  • Communicate facility related work orders, repair, and replacement needs
  • Manage damage billing process for community damages and student check outs throughout the year, in conjunction with Housing Operations
  • Respond to communication from students and other stakeholders in a timely manner
  • Create and manage department information via Google Drive

Crisis Intervention/Response

  • Serve on-call as first responder and information nexus for campus emergencies
  • Work with campus partners including Dean of Students, Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Student Health and Counseling Center, Office of Student Responsibility and Community Standards, Campus Ministry, and Title IX Coordinator in response to issues/incidents in the halls
  • Assist with incident debrief meetings and the Behavioral Concern Committee through providing information and updates on students of concern.

Collaboration

  • Collaborate with campus partners including but not limited to

Dean of Students, Department of Public Safety and Emergency
Preparedness, Student Health,Counseling Center, Office of Student Responsibility and Community Standards, Campus Ministry, and Title IX Office to support student growth anddevelopment

  • Collaborate with other Division of Student Development departments to support Division Strategic Priorities and University-Wide Undergraduate Learning Outcomes
  • Assist campus partners with student recruitment initiatives (scholarship weekends, campus visit days)

Committee Involvement

  • Serve on at least two departmental committees and task forces as needed
  • Assist with departmental and campus wide search committees

Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s Degree is required, preferred focus in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, or related field. Previous residential community staff experience preferred. The Residence Hall Coordinator position is considered a security sensitive position. Finalists will be subjected to a background check. All candidates will be required to submit academic transcripts to verify education.
