Salary: Level IV: $47,364 per year ($3,947/month, includes a $101/month shortage differential), SR-11, Step H, BU: 03
Level V: $51,216 per year ($4,268/month, includes a $112/month shortage differential), SR-13, Step H, BU: 03

At Hilo Medical Center, a nationally-recognized "Top Performing" hospital, the Social Service Assistant is a valuable member of our team. This position provides supportive services to professional staff to ensure that patients receive the highest quality of health care, provides assistance with pre-admission screening, the admission process and discharge planning. Maintains medical record documentation and participates in education, community planning meetings with family and/or agencies providing services to assist the patient and their families. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experience is credited based on a 40-hour workweek.
Education Experience: Experience requiring the ability to read, comprehend, and apply written directions and a high degree of verbal skill in addition to the ability to make basic mathematical computations, including averaging. This experience may be met from part-time and/or unpaid work. There must, however, be evidence that participation was on a continuous basis but not necessarily on a full-time normal work basis. This requirement may also be met by possession of a high school diploma.
Specialized Experience: Level IV: Three (3) years and Level V: Four (4) years of experience in providing supportive services to professional workers in social service or health related agency; e.g. performing clerical tasks in processing various documents, transporting patients and materials to and from various destinations, observing and reporting of patients interactions, emotional and physical or mental symptoms of problems; explaining to patients/residents the services available, assisting in overseeing group activities. Experience must have involved engaging with patients and their families.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
- Successful completion of thirty (30) semester credit hours of coursework from an accredited college or university, may be substituted for the Specialized Experiencerequirement on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of three (3) years.
- Satisfactory completion of a human, social services or health sciences curriculum at an accredited community college, technical school, or junior college which resulted in a Certificate of Achievement or Associate of Science or related degree may be substituted for Specialized Experienceon a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.
Must be available to work shifts, weekends, and holidays as necessary, based on hospital operations (services are provided 24/7).
MEDICAL/PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT: Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, two-step tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENT: COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment for Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. After receiving a conditional offer of employment, all prospective new HHSC employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. New employees are required to provide confirmation of their full vaccination status by presenting their CDC vaccination card or VAMS Certificate prior to their start date.
