Job Description


The Test Cell Engineer will act as the lead for projects of moderate to high complexity in the testing and development of engines. It is expected that the test engineer will execute testing activities, complete test cell improvement tasks, lead test cell automation efforts, and present results/conclusions to the customer with minimal supervision. This position will require significant time spent in engine test cells.

Testing will be focused on heavy-duty engines but may involve testing a broad range of engine types. Projects may include performance and emissions development, calibration, and/or validation and compliance testing. In many cases, test results may be used to demonstrate emissions conformity to state and federal agencies and will be conducted in compliance with 40 CFR Part 1065 and other relevant regulations.

The test cell engineer is expected to always act with integrity, strive for the highest in data quality, and fully support the certification/homologation process.

  • Responsible for efficiently and accurately executing test procedures while concurrently reviewing testing results to ensure reliability of data. It is expected that the test cell engineer will operate the test cell daily for a significant portion of each day.
  • Work with technicians to conduct engine tests and maintain optimal test cell operation per company and customer requirements.
  • Provide engineering support to customers including data analysis, results interpretation, component troubleshooting, duty cycle generation and evaluation, ECU flashing, configuring ECU development tools, control system calibrations and development
  • Perform testing to achieve product certification and confirm compliance for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resource Board (CARB) for powertrain emissions and OBD
  • Configure the test cell automation system for testing, including channel set-up, calibration, programming of test
  • Diagnose and resolve engine and test cell equipment problems in a timely manner
  • Lead automation process of engine-related equipment
  • Ensure combustion air, engine cooling, fueling, electrical, and emissions sampling subsystems are adequate for each project
  • Applies engineering principles and statistical methods routinely in project work
  • Responsible for advocating for the customer and strive to ensure the engine laboratories are producing high-quality data, being well utilized to meet program goals
  • Update internal procedures and develop new procedures as required
  • Lead development of new tools and advanced testing approaches in areas of automation system development, control system development, test procedure development, and optimization
  • Provide leadership to install, improve, and commission advanced instruments/systems, partnering with other groups
  • Participate in building business opportunities with key customers by providing superior service and technical expertise

Qualifications


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical preferred)
  • 3 years of experience in related work environment and/or as automotive technician

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Ability to diagnose test operations problems using scientific principles and lead team to implement effective solution
  • Subject matter expert for engine testing, focused on performance and exhaust emissions
  • Be accountable for meeting engine test and development project objectives and meeting quality objectives
  • Advanced knowledge of engine operation and controls for exhaust emissions (gasoline, diesel, natural gas)
  • Working knowledge of engine calibration software and hardware tools
  • Ability to competently and independently operate an engine test cell laboratory
  • Understanding of Federal regulations for emissions testing: CFR 40 Part 1065, and relevant standard setting parts
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on and calibration of the laboratory equipment
  • Capable of running, operating, and troubleshooting an engine test cell
  • Outstanding leadership experience and abilities, comfortable in dealing with varied engineers’ personalities providing coaching, mentoring, support to those in his/her group as well as others in the organization
  • Outstanding computer skills and computer programming skills
  • Strong Verbal & Written Communication skills
  • Desire to work in fast-paced, rapidly changing and results-oriented environment
  • High ability to manage time to prioritize competing tasks and demands being able to successfully resolve them
  • Ability to approach problems in a scientific manner and implement resolutions with minimal guidance
  • Ability to effectively communicate and articulate ideas, operational, and test quality issues to engineers and managers

  • Will work with engine dynamometers and associated control system
  • Will work with electric motors and pumps, compressors
  • Forklift
  • Hand tools such as pneumatic wrench/ratchet, drills, grinders, saw
  • Common shop tools such as spanners, ratchets, screwdrivers, pry bar, hammer
  • Multi-meter

Salary Range: $80,000-$100,000/year
