The AUDELCO and Obie Award-winning ​Billie Holiday Theatre, founded by Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, is devoted to the discovery of world-class storytelling with a focus on stories for, by and about people of African descent. The Billie presents, promotes and sustains art that reflects the definitive issues of our time in and through all of its forms of expression. The Billie Holiday Theatre has been a significant platform for many Black theater artists, including Samuel L. Jackson, Ruby Dee, Debbie Allen, Wendell Pierce, John Amos, Sonia Sanchez and more. Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation (Restoration) has been a prominent member of the Brooklyn community for nearly fifty years. As the nation's first community development corporation, Restoration successfully partners with residents and businesses to improve the quality of life of Central Brooklyn by fostering economic self-sufficiency, enhancing family stability and growth, promoting the arts and culture and transforming the neighborhood into a vibrant place to live, work and visit.

With a dynamic leadership time, The Billie produces and/or presents a season of 3 - 4 plays, 3 dance concerts, monthly music salons, monthly theater readings, a large outdoor music festival, sUmmer programming, developmental projects, and education/outreach programs. Restoration does several large annual events each year and has ongoing day-to-day services for Central Brooklyn and beyond.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Technical Director is a Part Time position that reports directly to the General Manager:

About the Position:

  • Collaborates with guest designers to have designs developed and approved on schedule; vet the designs for budgets, feasibility and safety; translate designs (elevations/models) into working drawings for construction
  • Plans detailed production schedules in coordination with the Production Manager
  • Oversees Shop Supervisor and over hire staff and manage relationships with any outside shops or consultants
  • Preps and Supervises builds: engineer and draft as needed; schedule and hire labor; plan and order materials and supplies
  • Coordinates with the scenic artists to ensure the set is painted in a timely fashion within budget
  • Coordinates builds and load-ins so that rehearsals can safely move on set as scheduled and technical rehearsals can be fully productive.
  • Provides coordination and support to other technical production staff and stage management for lighting, sound, projections, backstage costume and props needs, specialty rigging, etc.
  • Act as the lighting and sound engineer for most mainstage productions.
  • Controls costs for labor and materials to stay within approved budget, provide timely reports of all expenditures, hires, and employee hours to the appropriate staff members
  • Sources and manages projects for outside income utilizing the resources within the scene shop facility
  • Attends staff and production meetings; technical and dress rehearsals
  • Assists in creating and enforcing in- house standards for both our house crew and visiting crew members as well as designers and other technicians working in the theatre.
  • Determine technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging and special needs necessary for events and performances in advance of production dates.
  • Configure, set-up, maintain and operate theatrical lighting, projections and sound systems for theater, dance, music and other productions and events; assists venue clients with design and technical matters.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment and to maintain inventory of necessary supplies.
  • Ability to provide technical operational support on nights and weekends when rentals, partnerships and other programming occurs.

CRITICAL COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESS:

  • You represent the Theatre well and build positive relationships with crew members, over hire staff, and designers
  • You have at least five years professional experience in scenic construction and installation, lighting and sound installations, with demonstrable leadership experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Technical Direction or related field is preferred.
  • You have experience supervising a full service scene shop including wood working, rigging of all types, welding and automation, and are highly skilled in AutoCAD/ Vectorworks
  • You have strong planning, organizational, communication, teaching and management skills as well as knowledge of tools and techniques for construction and basic engineering
  • You have an appreciation of and ability to support the creative needs and ambitions of the theatre’s artists while keeping work on schedule, within budget and on plan
  • Personally committed to our mission, goals and objectives;

  • You are comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders and being on heights up to 50 ft.

  • You have night and weekend availability to provide technical support and operation in lighting, sound, set, projection, and/or other as needed.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • 10 hour shift
  • 8 hour shift
