DESCRIPTION

The Department of Political Science was founded in 1974 and currently has 38 ladder-rank and 11 adjunct faculty who represent a broad spectrum of backgrounds, methodologies, and approaches. A relatively young department, Political Science has skyrocketed to prominence among peer institutions in the United States. The most recent National Academy of Sciences study ranks UCSD among the top graduate programs in political science in the country. The doctoral program encompasses four broad sub-fields: American politics, comparative politics, international relations, and political theory.

Each year, the Department of Political Science supports nearly 100 scheduled undergraduate courses, 40 graduate courses, 30+ summer session courses, over 9,000 undergraduate course enrollments, and over 900 undergraduate majors; The department receives an estimated 300 graduate program applications and attracts significant levels of extramural funding in support of research projects.

Applies professional Student Services concepts. Provides varied student services to students, faculty, and department/school/college management. Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.

This position has a hybrid schedule with 2 days in the office and 3 days working from home.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and experience with academic advising and counseling techniques. Ability to counsel and advise students on matters related to the department’s undergraduate program, curricula and UCSD’s policies and procedures, and UCDC.

  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. Ability to set up and maintain internal academic records for students, to audit forms and to assemble documents.

  • Computer skills with ability to access and maneuver through student databases (ISIS and TritonLink) , to perform internet searches, maintain websites, and utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Theoretical and practical knowledge in policies and procedures relating to undergraduate students and curriculum administration, to advise students, faculty, administrators and others about academic policies and requirements and to implement the department's goals and objectives for the program.

  • Understanding of University rules and regulations. Ability to interpret requirements and procedures at UCSD, including enrollment, registration, grading and graduation.

  • Effective interpersonal skills. Proven understanding of the philosophy of quality service and group process, with proven aptitude for working as part of a team. Experience and skills for effective one-on-one counseling and active listening. Strong skill in problem-solving and conflict resolution.

  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Ability to interact effectively with people from different backgrounds and nationalities.Ability to maintain confidentiality with faculty and students, and to handle sensitive matters with tact.

  • Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Ability to recognize and respond to the pressures and needs of the university student.

  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Ability to evaluate academic data and academic records and make analytical decisions.

  • Experience working with minimal supervision, demonstrated initiative and self-direction.
