Job Description:

Summary

The Associate Director Facilities Services directly leads facilities maintenance, energy management and recommissioning activities at Iowa State University. This role provides continuous leadership to approximately 75 departmental staff, ensuring the staff is trained and equipped for daily duty. This role

provides leadership to all Facilities Services work units during absence of Director Facilities Services.

This is an action-oriented role, responsible for organizational effectiveness – adept at performance analysis to make data-driven decisions in support of the mission to serve the campus. Daily duties may require field assessment, monitoring and prioritizing work, planning preventative and predictive maintenance, scheduling, and directing internal and external resources.

This position serves as an integral member of the Facilities Leadership team, which is comprised of a group of professional team-oriented, communicative, and driven individuals united by the mission to serve our campus community. The facilities services team is approximately 280 skilled trades and professional level staff.

Facilities Planning and Management is a service organization working to enrich, support and preserve the Iowa State University campus. We are composed of more than 450 full-time and a large number of student employees dedicated to trades, support and professional services to the University. The term facilities refers to all the buildings, grounds, walks, drives, parking lots, and utility systems belonging to ISU, which means our staff covers nearly every facet of campus. We are dedicated professionals with very diverse skills working to provide the University community with a safe, comfortable and usable campus environment.

Must be physically able to climb stairs and ladders, and go out on roofs in multi-story buildings, enter confined and mechanical equipment spaces in all weather conditions. Able to respond to recall in event of facility system disruptions outside normal working hours


Example of Duties

  • Participates in development of short and long-term strategic plan.
  • Develops project processes and procedures to maximize efficiency of the work unit.
  • Evaluates and oversees the operation and maintenance of physical facilities.
  • Develops spending and budget reports.
  • Ensures compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements, and grant provisions.
  • Maintains knowledge of policies, procedures, and controls and systems.
  • Supervises and trains staff.
  • May manage technical, engineering, and/or maintenance staff for building and ground maintenance and repair projects, and electronic system controls.

  • Provides input into annual departmental objectives and action plans
  • Accountable for achievement of key annual objectives for a department
  • May provide input into institution policy within area of functional expertise
  • Responsible for functional output of a department or work team
  • Manages subordinate staff
  • Has full management responsibility for direct reports, specifically the authority to hire, fire, and counsel
  • May provide input to the budgeting process
  • Requests approval for financial actions beyond a limited scope
  • May provide input into financial decisions that impact department or work area
