Job Description
We are seeking ambitious, inventive, and talented students to join the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard as early career researchers upon graduation! In the role of a Research Associate I:
  • You can make a difference in biomedicine – In studying the biological basis of many diseases including cancer and infectious disease you are laying the groundwork for future therapies that change lives.
  • You will gain invaluable experience - This unique research opportunity will give you access to the best technologies and sharpest minds that biomedical research has to offer. It is truly an experience that is unparalleled by any other biomedical research institution. Should you choose to, you will be well prepared to pursue a graduate or medical degree or continue to advance your career here over time.
  • You will be supported in your efforts to learn and grow - Every week there are talks open to the Broad community on a variety of scientific topics, often hinging on results that have not yet been published. Many current Research Associates rave about the mentorship they have received from other Broadies, and the variety of social events that create a fun, collaborative environment.
Why Broad?
The Broad Institute is pioneering a new model of collaborative biomedical science to transform biology and medicine. To do that, we have created a unique community of amazing, creative people — “Broadies” — each with a passion for pushing scientific frontiers. Our community transcends academic and organizational barriers, encouraging different points of view and making all Broadies part of something meaningful. Our unique
culture
of collaboration along with the common theme of our people being deeply passionate about making a difference in the world and improving human health unite us all as Broadies.
The Broad community includes professional scientists from many disciplines, software engineers and computational biologists, administrative staff, and students, as well as renowned researchers from partner institutions. We seek to cultivate an interdisciplinary, innovative, goal-oriented work environment that unleashes scientific creativity and empowers Broadies to pursue ambitious and critical projects.
At the Broad, we understand that the most important thing that will lead to these breakthroughs in human biology, health, and disease is our people. In joining us, you will also be able to:
  • Work with and learn from world-class researchers, physicians, and data scientists at Harvard, MIT, and the Harvard teaching hospitals.
  • Join a
    community
that deeply values diversity and continually strives for inclusion, which are essential to achieving our scientific mission.
  • Be eligible for
    comprehensive benefits
, including discounted transportation passes, tuition reimbursement, and wellness offerings.
  • Have access to resources to help you explore career paths and take the next step — whether it’s attending graduate or medical school or pursuing a path forward at Broad
Infectious Disease and Microbiome Program
The Broad is a leader in applying genomic technologies to the study of infectious disease and the microbiome — efforts that have implications for global health. Based primarily within the institute’s
Infectious Disease and Microbiome (IDM) Program
, these efforts focus on the development and use of cutting-edge tools and approaches to better understand the mechanisms underlying infectious diseases, antibiotic resistance, and the workings of the human microbiome. Our researchers seek to use this knowledge to inform the prevention and treatment of devastating diseases.
Scientists at the Broad share ideas and launch collaborative projects to tackle key challenges. The IDM program includes collaborations across several Broad programs and platforms as well as many other labs in the Harvard/MIT community and beyond.
Those involved in microbial research at the Broad also aim to:
  • Identify new therapeutic targets and develop novel approaches to treating both chronic and infectious diseases
  • Characterize microbial genetics and understand the relationship between microbial populations and human health
  • Understand the mechanisms that drive antibiotic resistance
The Infectious Disease and Microbiome Program is led by Broad core institute member
Deb Hung
and institute member
Ramnik Xavier
.
This research opportunity is particularly suited for candidates who are passionate about infectious disease research and plan to continue their scientific education in graduate and/or medical school. RAs work closely with academic trainees to design and execute bench-level experiments; present their work at lab meetings; attend seminars (and possible conferences) related to research; and contribute directly to research publications. Our goal is to foster a love for research and equip the individual with the experience and skills needed to pursue future career interests.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least a current undergraduate senior with an expected graduation date of Dec. 2022 or May 2023
  • Majored in any life science, chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical engineering or similar degree program
  • At least 1 year of undergraduate independent research experience (outside of coursework)
  • Exceptional organizational skills, critical thinking skills and attention to details
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills and ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and external collaborators
  • Ability to work independently in response to guidance and direction and as part of a team
  • Ability to exercise judgment within defined practices, techniques and standard operating procedures
  • Desire to learn, develop, and execute new assays or lab techniques
  • Familiarity with general molecular biology and protein biochemistry techniques is strongly desired.
  • Experience with mammalian cells and tissue culture is a plus.
  • Experience with protein purification (affinity, ion-exchange and size exclusion chromatography) is a plus.
  • Interest in staying with the Broad for at least two years
All Broad employees, regardless of work location, must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Requests for exemption for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs will be considered.
Candidates interested in the
Broad Biomedical Post-Baccalaureate Scholars Program
(BBPS) should complete an ECR application to begin the process. After submitting, you can then complete the
BBPS-specific short form, which requires
unofficial college transcript(s). The deadline for BBPS applications is February 20th. Please note that the BBPS admissions process is separate from the Early Career Researcher hiring process. Receiving a job offer does not guarantee admission into BBPS, but in order to be admitted to BBPS, you must have a job offer from a research group at the Broad Institute.
What to expect next:
  • Please allow 10 minutes to complete the initial application process as it needs to be completed in one sitting. We will ask for your CV/résumé, cover letter, and responses to a short questionnaire.
  • If you minimally qualify for the position, you will then receive an email request from SparkHire to complete an on-demand interview as the first step in the interview process. Those responses will be reviewed by our recruiting team and possible next steps will be communicated via email.
