We seek a Full-Time Graphic Designer to join the Texas Epidemic Public Health Institute as part of the UTHealth School of Public Health in Houston, TX, 77030. This hybrid position will allow for an in-person and remote schedule. In this position, you will perform and coordinate graphic design functions for projects such as brochures, reports, publications, web features, social media, posters, newsletters, and other printed and digital material services to support the marketing and communications strategies of the Texas Public Health Institute. This role will be a vital member of the agency's communication team, which is responsible for raising awareness of TEPHI's programs and developing best practices and tools to make public health guidance accessible, trustworthy, and timely.

Position Summary:

Texas Epidemic Public Health Institute (TEPHI), established by the 87th Texas Legislature (2021), is an agency associated with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). By leveraging the robust capabilities of Texas’ largest school of public health and its six campuses located throughout the state in Austin, Brownsville, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio TEPHI will:

  • Create a trained multi-sector public health reserve of at least 3,100 members across the state.
  • Establish a reliable and secure data analysis infrastructure reinforced by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
  • Create a laboratory testing network to monitor for emerging infectious agents beyond COVID-19.
  • Develop new and operationalize current “work and learn safe” protocols for small and rural businesses, schools, and essential food production.

Performs and coordinates graphic design functions for projects such as brochures, reports, publications, web features, social media, posters, newsletters, and other printed and digital material services in support of the marketing and communications strategies of the Texas Epidemic Public Health Institute (TEPHI).


Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Ability to conceptualize and deliver creative visual content to align with TEPHI’s voice.
  • Utilizes desktop publishing to generate layouts and designs for the majority of projects.
  • Coordinates with internal teams, including communications, in the design concept phase through completion of a project to ensure needs and preferences are met alongside brand consistency.
  • Monitors and prioritizes multiple projects.
  • Puts together visual materials and mock-ups for presentation to internal and external teams.
  • Ensures that artwork and end products are approved by TEPHI leadership and specific program staff before printing or publication.
  • Coordinates with outside agencies, art services, printers, etc. for final deliverables of projects.
  • Reviews exceptions requested by project managers with supervisor in order to maintain product and or services within guidelines.
  • Provides photographic and videography services as needed to produce materials integrated across a variety of multimedia formats.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Computer Graphics Training

Preferred:

  • Strong design and communications skills required
  • Proficiency with software packages including but not limited to Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite
  • HD video/audio production/editing and photography skills preferred
  • A strong eye for visual composition, with the ability to give and receive constructive criticism.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all internal teams and adapt to changing needs.
  • Self-starter with exemplary planning and time management skills to meet deadlines.
  • Understanding of marketing, production, website design, corporate identity, product packaging, advertisements, and multimedia design
  • Experience with content management systems, social media knowledge and experience with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube, Google Analytics, etc.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in graphic design production such as art direction, production, and printing supervision.

Physical Requirements: Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
