Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking a Head Preparator. Express Newark (EN) operates a network of exhibition spaces across campus, and numerous associated exhibitions and public programs. The Head Preparator is responsible for overseeing the installation, de-installation and general movement and care of artworks under the jurisdiction of Express Newark.
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following.
- Coordinates the planning, preparation, installation, maintenance, and deinstallation of artwork
- Seeks suppliers and service providers to facilitate the presentation of art for the EN
- Works with staff to facilitate appropriate programming for EN
- Moves artworks as dictated by the EN exhibition schedule
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Requires up to two years relevant experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy.
Certifications/Licenses
Preferred Qualifications
- B.A./B.F.A preferred
- Driver license and hydraulic crane experience
- Experience with exhibition lighting is highly desirable
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Requires up to two years relevant experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy
- Essential to have extensive experience in art handling and/or technician and/or preparator work in the arts industry at acceptable venues (with equal/equivalent international museum standards of art management), at least five (5) years
- Experience leading/managing exhibition installation team to achieve professional results
Equipment Utilized
Word processing, Excel, Photoshop, Illustrator, Outlook and museum collections management software.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Must be able to lift at least 75 pounds and not be averse to heights.
- Must be able to remain calm under pressure, work to tight deadlines, and work efficiently with contemporary artists and arts professionals.
