The University of Indianapolis Police Department is seeking applicants for the Police Officer position.

The Police Officer duties focus on protecting people and property at the University of Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Officers patrol an established jurisdiction where they respond to calls, enforce laws, make arrests, issue citations, and testify in court. Officers are responsible for making traffic stops and ensuring traffic safety in and around the University. The officer’s time is divided between patrolling, writing reports, conducting educational programs, and continued training.

Responsibilities

  • Protects the lives of students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors, and also protects property and facilities through enforcement of laws and regulations.
  • Responds to calls for police services. Analyzes and reacts to emergency situations quickly, calmly, and correctly to adapt effective course of action, giving due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
  • Proactively patrols assigned areas. Enforces laws and traffic regulations, conducts interviews, apprehends violators, and makes arrests.
  • Conducts and assists in criminal and traffic investigations.
  • Prepares written reports and field notes of investigations and patrol activities. Testifies in court.
  • Exercises judgement in determining when to use force and to what degree.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by practicing responsible use, completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturers instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, notifying supervisor of needed repairs, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Communicates with campus community, co-workers, subordinates, or others to provide directions and training, explain departmental policies and procedures, laws, ordinances, codes, etc., resolves complaints and personnel matters, and gathers and disseminates information.
  • Maintains compliance with law, codes, University policy, and department's general orders.
  • Shares information and works with other law enforcement agencies as directed and appropriate.


Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record that meets the University’s driving policy
  • Strong moral and ethical character
  • Service-oriented approach and positive attitude
  • Ability to withstand emotional, physical, and mentally taxing experiences
  • Ability to understand the perspectives of many people and a willingness to help the community
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment
  • Ability to use sound judgment, problem solve, and exercise discretion
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation, physical examination, drug screen, and emotional and psychological fitness examination
  • Must be able to successfully pass the minimum standards to attend the ILEA academy
