About the Department
The Science and Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS) Center is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported Science and Technology Center (STC). STEPS seeks to discover new science and develop new technologies and techniques that will increase the level of recycled phosphorus and reduce society’s dependence of mined phosphorus by using a convergence research approach. The outcomes of STEPS activities will lead to the enhanced resilience of food systems and improve environmental conditions.

STEPS education and broadening participation activities will broaden the participation of women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities in STEM disciplines. STEPS is a partnership between North Carolina State University, Arizona State University, University of Florida, RTI International, Appalachian State University, Marquette University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering at North Carolina A&T State University and University of North Carolina at Greensboro. STEPS headquarters will be located in the Plant Sciences Building, a new intersectional space on NC State’s Centennial Campus that will be completed in early 2022
